As Singapore advances long-term strategies to safeguard its coastlines against projected sea-level rise, SimPlus has been appointed to undertake a comprehensive maritime traffic analysis study to assess the operational and navigational implications of proposed coastal protection measures for Singapore’s port and marine traffic systems.

The study forms part of broader efforts to evaluate the feasibility of shoreline protection systems designed to enhance Singapore’s coastal resilience while ensuring the continued efficiency and safety of maritime operations in one of the world’s busiest shipping hubs.

SimPlus is leveraging advanced marine traffic simulation models to analyse how proposed protection measures may affect vessel movements, port accessibility, navigational safety, and overall marine traffic capacity. The study evaluates a wide range of vessel classes and ship sizes operating within Singapore waters, considering both present and future traffic scenarios.

To support the analysis, SimPlus integrates multiple maritime data sources, including the Port Traffic Management System (PTMS), Automated Identification System (AIS) records, and Ship Size Study datasets. These datasets are used to model vessel arrival patterns, traffic distributions, queueing behaviour, and navigational interactions under different protection system configurations.

The simulations assess the potential impact of vessel queueing and associated navigational risks arising from modified waterways, access channels, or operational constraints introduced by future coastal protection infrastructure. Historical marine traffic data, together with forecasted growth in vessel traffic and changing ship characteristics, are incorporated to determine the long-term marine traffic capacity and operational feasibility of the proposed systems.

The study findings will provide valuable technical insights to support planning, design optimisation, and risk assessment for future coastal protection developments, helping stakeholders balance climate adaptation objectives with the operational needs of Singapore’s maritime sector.

As a leading maritime and port technology consultancy, SimPlus specialises in marine traffic simulation, port planning, and navigational risk assessment studies.
