Going green at a cost?

Going green at a cost?

Going green is an irreversible trend in port operations. But what are the impacts of new technologies and operations concepts that focus on low emission operations? How can they be better tuned to suit different port settings? SimPlus has been commissioned by PSA Corporation to quantitatively assess the impact of adopting certain green technologies on operations efficiency, and what can be done if there is any adverse effect identified. More details will be released upon the completion of the project. Stay tuned.

Minister’s Innovation Award, we did it again!

Minister’s Innovation Award, we did it again!

The AnchorageView system, developed by SimPlus and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), has been conferred the Minister’s Innovation Award (Distinguished) at the awards ceremony on 2nd Novement, 2010, for its contribution in helping MPA improve its efficiency and productivity in anchorage management and information sharing.

The annual Minister’s Innovation Award was launched by Ministry of Transportation (MOT) in 2002. The Award aims to promote innovation and creativity, and winners are selected based on the quality of their initiatives, which should demonstrate a level of innovation that contribute significantly to achieving the Ministry’s mission and goals, result in benefits to the public and industry and have proven to be cost and time-effective.

Minister Raymond Lim said: “I am impressed by the quality of these initiatives, most of which have already been implemented and are making significant positive impact to our transport landscape. I hope the awards will spur the recipients and others to continuously look out for areas of improvement, create novel solutions and strive for even more innovation for the benefit of Singapore”.

It is the second time for SimPlus to be honored with this recognition. In 2007 SimPlus received MIA for its work on Terminal Operations Simulation System. SimPlus will continue to strive to improve the maritime landscape in Singapore and the region.

AnchorageView now live at POCC2

AnchorageView now live at POCC2

AnchorageView, a real-time anchorage monitoring and planning tool for efficient management of anchorages, is now up and running at MPA’s (Maritime Port Authority, Singapore) Port Operations Control Centre (POCC2). AnchorageView allows the user to monitor current anchorage usage and also predict whether there will be ample space in anchorages to cater to incoming vessel requests. If there is insufficient space in any anchorage, the system automatically suggests an alternative location for incoming vessels. The system is currently in its testing stages, and is expected to lead to the following benefits to MPA:

  1. Efficient use of available anchorage space,
  2. Reduction in cases of vessel diversions,
  3. Enhanced navigational safety in port waters and
  4. Comprehensive anchorage usage records.

AnchorageView will also help pilotage service providers better manage their constrained pilot resources, and enable better logistics planning between ship owners and other maritime service providers. Feedback obtained from the users will be gathered and implemented so as to make the system more useful and robust.

CRAFTS ready to cruise

CRAFTS ready to cruise

A year since SimPlus and Singapore Cruise Centre Private Limited (SCCPL) established a strategic alliance, the co-developed tool, Cruise and Ferry Terminal Simulator (CRAFTS), is now ready to be successfully rolled out. CRAFTS was built based on SimPlus’ Passenger Terminal Simulation (PTS) platform, and devised as a simulation tool targeted at cruise and ferry terminals, for the purpose of terminal design, feasibility studies and capacity planning.

CRAFTS is the first of its kind in the market that is devised by a direct industry practitioner and supported by real-life statistics and data. With CRAFTS to visualize and validate design concepts and to quantitatively analyze operations for the best terminal setup, SCCPL-SimPlus partnership is on its way to redefine the consultancy standard and create greater value for their customers.

In the words of Jay Pang (Vice President, Operations, SCCPL), “We are indeed blessed by a team at SimPlus who are also knowledgeable with port operations processes. This had allowed us to easily communicate the intricacy of the passenger terminal operations to the development team, and for them to effectively translate our articulations into realistic computer simulation. I see great potential in our partnership of domain knowledge for further development of pragmatic passenger terminal planning and operational tools.”

Can the Straits handle the rise in vessel traffic?

Can the Straits handle the rise in vessel traffic?

According to the Review of Maritime Transport 2008 published by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), global seaborne trade will increase by 44 percent in 2020 and double by 2031. This would consequently lead to an increase in the volume of maritime traffic through the Straits of Malacca and Singapore (SoMS).

The preliminary findings from the SoMS capacity study by SimPlus showed that there is still sufficient room for vessel traffic growth in the SoMS. The study was commisioned by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the findings were shared with MPA’s counterparts in Indonesia and Malaysia at a meeting in Singapore earlier this month, which was also attended by a number of user states and the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The findings were later shared with the local industry players, academia and media. The study commenced in April 2009 and the next phase will examine possible measures that can enhance the carriage capacity of the Singapore Strait. The full text of the working paper released can be seen here, and news reports from different media sources can be found at the following sites, among others: Business Times, Straits Times, Channel NewsAsia, Lloyd’s List, Lianhe Zaobao.

SimPlus cruises with Singapore Cruise Centre

SimPlus cruises with Singapore Cruise Centre

SimPlus has recently signed a partnership agreement with Singapore Cruise Centre Private Limited (SCCPL) to jointly develop a Cruise and Ferry Terminal Simulation tool (CRAFTS), a suite of simulation programs for feasibility study, planning and design of marine passenger terminal operations. With CRAFTS, SCCPL will be able to differentiate itself from other competitors in the international cruise industry by redefining the consultancy standard and creating greater value for SCCPL’s customers. CRAFTS also paves the way for SimPlus to explore a new area in the maritime sector.

Asia Pacific regional market is acknowledged by the cruise industry to be the new ‘playground’ for cruising; not just offering new destinations and itineraries but also contributing to growing cruise passengers. SCCPL’s unique position in operating hybrid cruise-ferry terminals alongside at one location, with 18 years of experience in managing cruise and ferry terminal and proven credentials of having won numerous Dream World Cruise Destination Magazine Awards since 1997 enables SCCPL to be the ideal test-bed for the development of the simulation tools by offering ‘live’ data and environment.

SimPlus values this partnership with SCCPL, with their relevant expert input in enhancing the simulation parameters and capabilities, and together, we look forward to sharing CRAFTS with developing regional ports in the region, using Singapore as the test-bed and reference model.
