How feasible is remote pilotage

Singapore has one of the world’s busiest hub port and waterways, hosting more than 1000 vessels at any one time. Vessels would call at pilot boarding grounds to pick up pilots, where the slowing down and speeding up maneuvers may cause traffic conflicts and navigational risks, especially during the peak hours.

SimPlus has joined the ST Electronics to work on an innovative project to assess the technology readiness for remote pilotage. SimPlus licensed its Vessel Traffic Simulation System (VTSS) for the simulation of vessel traffic movement, and congestion / risk prediction based on the vessels’ passage plans. VTSS comes with a machine learning engine that captures past and real-time data for vessel routing prediction. It has accumulated millions of historical movement records and established realistic trajectories for different vessel types in the Port.

The project is run under MPA’s Living Lab facility. MPA Living Lab provides a technology partnership platform, with sufficient scale and real operating conditions in the port of Singapore, that technology providers and industry partners can plug into for the co-development and piloting of innovations.

SimPlus was invited by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to showcase its gamut of software and solutions targeted to maritime safety, at the International Safety@Sea Conference 2018. Driven by real-time and predictive analytics, the Near-term Collision Prediction and Avoidance system has been running 24/7 at MPA’s Port Operations Control Centre, to assist its duty officers to detect possible conflicts among vessels at the precautionary areas and send early warnings to vessels for preventive actions. Its ship-borne version, vTrack (Vessel Tracking System) and VTSS (Vessel Traffic Simulation System) were were also demonstrated during the exhibition.

Organised by MPA, the International Safety@Sea Conference is a platform for industry practitioners across different sectors of the maritime industry to share best safety practices at sea. This initiative is part of the Safety@Sea Week, which aims to enhance safety by raising safety awareness and instilling a safety-first culture. SimPlus’ charity drive takes flight with MPA’s Charity Golf Event

SimPlus is proud to join the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the maritime community in the fundraising event MPA Charity Gold 2018. More than $290,000 has been raised for the Community Chest and MPA’s two adopted charities; The Salvation Army – Kids in Play Programme (KIP) and REACH Family Service Centre.

It is the third edition of the biennale charity event organized by MPA. SimPlus is very happy to have made a small difference in helping those in need. More details about the event can be found here.

Senior Minister of State for Transport and Health, Dr Lam Pin Min, during his speech at the Singapore Maritime Technology Conference 2018 mentioned the role being played by SimPlus in helping Maritime Singapore remain vibrant and competitive. SimPlus is one of the technology developers in the process of developing enabling technologies for the safe and efficient operations at the port of Singapore in the midst of increasing vessel traffic. SimPlus develop simulation models for predicting traffic hotspots and planning systems for optimizing anchorage use.

While addressing the delegates from 27 countries in 7 different maritime sectors, Dr. Lam said,

“On its part, the Government will leverage technology to sharpen Singapore’s competitive edge. You would be aware that we are building a next-generation 65-million TEU container terminal in Tuas on the western end of Singapore. I am happy to update that Phase 1 of this mega project is progressing well, and the contract for Phase 2 reclamation will be signed later today. The new Tuas Terminal will incorporate the use of new technologies and automation to enhance operational efficiency and overcome Singapore’s manpower constraints.

MPA is also supporting the development of enabling technologies, such as the joint efforts by an A*STAR-led consortium to apply data analytics to maritime navigation and SimPlus, a local company to develop simulation models for predicting traffic hotspots. We look forward to working with more like-minded partners.”

SimPlus is helping Jurong Port get smarter

SimPlus is helping Jurong Port get smarter

SimPlus has started to work on the conceptualization, design and development of the LT Mobile platform, which would serve as an information sharing platform between the port operator, lighter vessels, and truckers, to update all parties on real-time arrival information, and thus facilitate just in time resource deployment and tracking.

The proof of concept (POC) project recently won the 2017 Smart Port Competition and was awarded a grant from MPA (refer to MPA’s Facebook post below). It will be trial tested later this year, and subsequently lead to full scale deployment, with integration into Jurong Port’s existing platforms and systems. With this SimPlus adds to its suite of mobile applications for real-time operations tracking ad planning, thus contributing to a smarter port.

SimPlus helps ensure the safety of navigation during the construction period of Tuas Port

SimPlus in-house developed Vessel Tracking System (vTrack) allows users to view real-time positions of their project vessels, and other vessels in the vicinity. Several additional features allow the users to configure the system to trigger alerts or sound alarms when any pre-set conditions are breached, such as speed, location (using geofencing) etc. Automated planning functionalities can also be embedded into the system, specific to the project requirements. A comprehensive statistics module allows the users to view key highlights of their operations and activities, and even playback any scenarios.

vTrack fully complies with the requirements from authority, and has been actively used by several contractors for projects in the western area of Singapore, which is seeing a myriad of stockpiling, reclamation and dredging projects projects related to the future Tuas Port, Jurong Island, and neighbouring areas.

vTrack is amongst SimPlus’ latest addition to its suite of tools to enable a smarter port, and we are happy to see its successful deployment in the port of Singapore over the past few years.
