VTPS2 (Vessel Traffic Planning and Simulation System) is a vessel traffic simulator capable of simulating realistic vessel navigation behavior in port waters. Given the compounded growth in maritime traffic, it has proven to be very useful in assisting users in capacity and risk assessment of channels and other waterways.
VTPS2 is conceptually divided into the following modules:
- Vessel Traffic Generation, for realistic vessel arrivals (forecasted or current) in the system.
- Vessel Route Generation, for generating appropriate activities inside the port waters.
- Vessel Navigation, for accurate modelling of vessel movement behaviour under different circumstances, taking into account the variation due to the differences in human behaviour.
VTPS2 is flexible and configurable, allowing users to customize it by plugging in waterway layouts, traffic information and navigation parameters.
VTPS2 has been built with the extensive involvement of master mariners and pilots, so as to realistically model all aspects of vessel movements in port waters. It has been applied for capacity planning and risk assessment in the busy port of Singapore, which handles more than 140,000 vessel movements per annum.
