In collaboration with MPA, SimPlus is working on projects to enhance the safety of port waters and the Singapore Straits. An update was provided to members of SSA where project objectives and key results were discussed.

Work is underway on the development of a Near-term Collision Prediction and Avoidance System which receives live AIS data feeds, and detects and highlights to the user any build-up of scenarios of high risk. A prototype of the system is being tested at MPA’s Port Operation Control Centre, and there is also a possibility of it being deployed out at sea, for use by pilots and ship masters.

In addition SimPlus is also applying its Vessel Traffic Simulation platform to evaluate a few different traffic management schemes for the Singapore Straits, with the intention of bringing down the risk in key high density regions. This project also relates to SimPlus’ STS (Ship Traffic Simulator), as part of the SESAME Straits project, in collaboration with the Norwegian research team.

More information about safe passage in the Singapore Strait can be found on MPA YouTube Channel (eastbound and westbound).
