SimPlus honoured to get a mention in speech by Deputy Prime Minster

SimPlus is honored to get a mention in the speech by Deputy Prime Minister, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs Mr Teo Chee Hean, at the 30th anniversary gala dinner of the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA), on 25th September 2015, Friday.

Mr Teo highlighted SimPlus in the area of innovation and technology. He mentioned that “..Our companies need to constantly develop and adopt new innovations in order to sustain Maritime Singapore’s resilience and competitiveness in the long run. MPA has been working closely with the industry to promote maritime R&D. More than a decade ago, MPA and A*STAR supported a joint project with NTU to develop simulation capabilities for marine traffic and port operations. Today, that project has spun off into its own company – SimPlus – developing simulation solutions and operations intelligence for different parts of the maritime industry. It has since worked with MPA on anchorage management, with our ports on cargo and terminal planning, and with the Singapore Cruise Centre on passenger terminal operations.”

SimPlus guest lectures for Port Productivity, Optimisation and Capacity Planning

Ms Stuti Nautiyal, SimPlus’ Managing Director was invited to guest lecture at IBC’s intensive training course on Port Productivity, Optimization and Capacity Planning. It was a 2 day comprehensive course where participants got to understand the various aspects of port productivity, learn how to optimise port operations and plan for port expansion. SimPlus was invited to present a session on Simulation and Port Operations Planning.

The course was organized by IBC Asia, a division of Informa plc, the largest publicly owned organiser of conferences and courses in the world providing inspiring marketplaces and the opportunity for knowledge to be shared. It was managed by Asia Ports & Terminals Consultants Pte. Ltd., a consultant for multipurpose ports and terminals.

SimPlus has contributed its part to a fund raising event for The Red Pencil Singapore, a charity organization to assist children in crisis situations, and help traumatized children express themselves through art as part of their healing process.

The donation drive, Great Wall Marathon campaign, was initiated by SimPlus’ client Dredging International, to help The Red Pencil start art therapy sessions with most of the community care and family services centers in Singapore. SimPlus is very happy to have made a small difference in the lives of some of the underprivileged in our society.

SimPlus develops Ship Traffic Simulator in partnership with Kongsberg NorControl IT

SimPlus develops Ship Traffic Simulator in partnership with Kongsberg NorControl IT

In 2012, the 5th Co-operation Forum on the Safety of Navigation and Environmental Protection in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore was held in Singapore. It led to an initiative that aims to help boost navigational safety and traffic efficiency in the Straits.

The initiative involves developing a Ship Traffic Management System (STMS) that effectively provides vessels with recommended speeds and routes as they passage through the Straits or prepare to call at a port along it

Spearheaded by maritime agencies in Singapore, Norway, Indonesia and Malaysia, the STMS project is part of the umbrella e-Navigation concept by the International Maritime Organization, which aims to harmonise maritime navigation systems to improve the safety, security and protection of the marine environment.

As part of this STMS project, a Ship Traffic Simulator (STS) is needed to determine the feasibility of proposed traffic management plans before their implementation in the real world. Maritime personnel will also be able to use this STS as a component in the next-generation VTS when new e-Navigation services are introduced between 2015 and 2020.

SimPlus is handling the design and development of the STS. It is working closely with renowned maritime research company Norwegian Marine Technology Research Institute (Marintek) on the design, while Kongsberg Norcontrol IT, a Norwegian firm that focuses on maritime surveillance, helps coordinate matters between this project and a parallel STMS initiative known as SESAME Straits (Secure, Efficient, and Safe maritime traffic Management in the Straits of Malacca and Singapore). SESAME Straits is funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN).

The project was featured on the MOU signing ceremony for the bilateral agreement on maritime education, training and research and development (R&D) between MPA and RCN. More detail can be found at MPA website.

SimPlus partners with MVA for Consultancy Services for Ferry Terminals

SimPlus partners with MVA for Consultancy Services for Ferry Terminals

Singapore’s regional ferry terminals play an important role to facilitate regional travels between Singapore and the region. The domestic ferry terminals provide for services to anchorages as well as nearby islands. While there is expected to be sufficient passenger handling capacities at the regional and domestic terminals in the near term, there is a need for future growth demand and supply capacities to be studied and planned for. In light of the recent population White Paper published by the Government, MPA is conducting a study to update the projected demand for domestic and regional passenger throughputs, review the overall ferry terminal operating landscape, and further optimize the terminal and land take usage. This is to ensure that adequate transport infrastructure could be planned for and built ahead of future anticipated demands. MPA is also reviewing the market structure of the ferry terminal sector, i.e. the optimal number of operator/s publicly licensed to operate the various ferry terminals in the medium to long term. This is to ensure that the operator model continues to serve the interests of the consumers in terms of competitive price and service levels while allowing the operator(s) to maintain independent financial viability.

MVA has been awarded the project by MPA, and SimPlus is working together with the MVA team, contributing its expertise in assessing the ferry terminal layouts by applying its Passenger Terminal Simulation (PTS) as well as conducting the Formal Safety Assessment (FSA) for the marine approaches to the terminals, to ensure safety of navigation in future.

MVA is a global transportation specialist and leading market research consultancy specializing in traffic engineering and transport planning and operations. Working closely with governments, NGOs, operators, financial institutions, developers, architects, planners, engineers and contractors, in both public and private sectors, MVA is experienced in providing consultancy services from initial concept stages, through to planning, feasibility, design and construction.

SimPlus engaged by Penta JV for FSA

Penta Ocean and its JV partners were recently awarded the JTC contract for the proposed reclamation of Tuas Port Finger One in Singapore.Given SimPlus’ extensive experience in conducting studies for the Singapore port, especially in the particular region of interest, SimPlus has been engaged by the JV to conduct Formal Safety Assessments (FSA) for its various project activities affecting the navigation of vessels in the major fairways adjacent to the project sites. The project will span about 5 years, and SimPlus looks forward to working together with the team on this exciting new project!

With its comprehensive understanding of the project activities and traffic movements within port waters, SimPlus continues to constantly strive to assist the various stakeholders in keeping the port safe and efficient.
